In order to help ERASMUS students, our teaching staff is usually available to provide some extra tuition and guidance in English. We also organize an Intensive Portuguese Course (80h) that is partially funded by the University and partially by the student (60 euros).

Provided that they produce an adequate medical insurance (generally Form E111 or E128) and have sufficient amount of money at their disposal, these citizens are permitted to stay in Portugal.

Non-EU citizens may require a student VISA. Students from non-EU countries should contact the Portuguese representative authorities in their home countries to enquire about current visa regulations Please contact the Portuguese Consulate in your country of origin for confirmation.. If there is no Portuguese Consulate in your country of origin, please contact the consulate of any Schengen country. Wherever possible, contact the Norwegian or Spanish consulate as they are part of the ERASMUS MUNDUS consortium.

Procedures and requirements for applying for a student visa vary from country to country, and inevitably they are more complex and demanding in some countries than others.

Campuses and location

After over twenty years of service to the community, the University of the Algarve has now achieved a degree of maturity deservedly acknowledged on account of both the expansion of its physical structures and of the consolidation of its tuition, research and supportive facilities. Today it enjoys operational and spacious premises: two campuses in Faro - Penha and Gambelas, and two other sites in Portimão and Vila Real de Santo António, which all provide excellent study, work, research and social conditions for approximately 10,000 students, 700 teaching staff and 400 administrative staff.

The two main campuses, Penha Campus and Gambelas Campus are 5km appart and are linked by a regular bus service. The Masters is run at the Gambelas Campus.

Click here to download a foto of the Gambelas Campus

The central administrative services and the two campuses of the University of the Algarve are located in Faro, the capital of the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal. Faro has been markedly influenced by its Moorish tradition, a fact attested to by its artistic and architectural heritage.
Although Faro is not far way from modern touristic resorts, it is also at a close distance of villages where time appears to have stood still. Visitors are enchanted by their ancestral lore and customs.
Faro enjoys a warm temperate climate all year round, given the Mediterranean influence. Gentle green hills covered by orchards overlook the city, while the calm turquoise sea washes over endless beaches of golden sand. The RIa Formosa lagoon, contouring the southern side of the town, is an excellent habitat for several species, including flamingos.

There are several world-class golf courses nearby.

ERASMUS MUNDUS students are provided with insurance cover free of charge by the EU. This documentation is necessary for visa applications.

Accessibility

There is disabled access to most of the buildings on the Gambelas Campus.

Gender Issues

The programme strives for gender and social equality. The programme promotes gender equality by encouraging women’s participation. The Gender Balance policy will enhance the attractiveness of science to women and address the shortfall of suitably qualified women. At present, one third of the academic staff and students are women, and we will work to increase this.

Best TIPS from previous students for future students:

bulletGet organized before you go out so you can make the most of your time out there.
bulletLearn a little Portuguese before you go to the Algarve
bulletVisit a tourist information office. There is one in the airport and another in downtown Faro close to the marina. They are very helpful and produce a monthly guide with details of everything including: exhibitions, sporting events, fairs, timetables, etc.
bulletGood places to visit include: Desert Island Beach (Ilha Deserta) or Farol, Loulé, Lagos and Olhão.

Application forms:

bulletThese look daunting but don't be put off, it is worth it!
bulletBring a copy of your insurance policy as you will be asked to produce it. An E111 will suffice.

Travel to Portugal:

bulletTry to contact students also travelling, as with any long journeys travlling with some one is always more enjoyable than being on your own.
bulletIt was an easy trip with no changes or complications.

Arrival:

bulletTaxis to Uni are good at ripping people off, a little Portuguese language (only a few phrases) might help you out, (as will not looking totally hopeless with your lonely planet or big map in your hand.)
bulletI think a more official welcome/someone meeting students at the airport would be a great advantage (although I did have sufficient information to get to my accommodation).

The Socrates-Erasmus office:

bulletI had no direct contact with the Socrates/Erasmus office at home or in Portugal. I was made aware that they were there though and shown in the Algarve where to find the office if I needed anything.

Accommodation:

bulletDon't be too put off by the uni accommodation (shared rooms, very noisy), just try and get organised before you go out to get accommodation with people you know.
bulletI stayed in halls of residence with undergraduate students who had very different work and lifestyle patterns to myself, which made things difficult. The students were unfriendly but this could have been a result of my very limited ability with their language (although most of them spoke English). With hindsight, I would have chosen somewhere else to stay during my trip and I think a number of options should be available to Erasmus students for their accommodation, including non-halls of residence / private sector accommodation.
bulletSheets and towels are provided in the halls of residence.

Transport in Portugal:

bulletUse of a bike will get you around Faro very well, check with airline and they might allow you to take your own for very little
bulletStaying on campus was very convenient for access to the university (labs/library/computers etc), but buses were very good (frequent and reliable) and timetables were readily available
bulletIt s worth going to "Hotel EVA" to get a bus pass. You will need your passport and a passport photo. These passes last one month and are substantially cheaper.

Canteen/Food:

bulletGood cheap food
bulletI used the canteen only once but there was no vegetarian option available, I think a choice of different diets is very important and should be included on the university menus (vegetarianism was generally very difficult in Portugal).

Laboratories:

bulletExcellent facilities, plenty of space to make a mess ( so long as you don't block the drains and clear up afterwards)
bulletAbsolutely excellent, everything I needed was provided (equipment/reagents etc), the labs were spacious, new and clean and the technical help was really good.
bulletLab technicians should be befriended early on!

Library:

bulletNot a wide selection of books and journals, but getting better
bulletJournals were very limited (perhaps more could be put on-line), as were general texts, it would be useful to have a small number of English texts for general lab procedures/basics etc. Clearer signs around the campus and outside buildings (e.g. library) would be very useful.
bulletEnglish novels are plentiful so you needn't bring any out

Computing facilities:

bulletNot extensive, take a laptop if you have one.
bulletFacilities were good; access to networks was initiated almost immediately, which was excellent. Computer space was easy to find, i.e. there were enough computers on campus during the summer when I was there.

Language issues:

bulletYou will get by with only English, but people will receive you much better and will be far \ friendlier when they realise you are making an effort (so what if you mispronounce something, at least you've tried.
bulletI think a course of Portuguese should have been made available before and during my exchange, this would have been very useful (just the basics), and I would have been very enthusiastic to take part, it would have added to the whole experience.

Health issues:

bulletMake sure you take your sun cream and keep rehydrated in the scorching Algarve sun.
bulletYou should aim to drink at least two litres of water a day

Alumni society web page:

bulletI don’t know that I personally would use this service, I travelled to Portugal with other students from my home university and can keep in touch with them via home university alumni etc. There was no opportunity to meet other postgraduate Portuguese students in the same field.

"Student experience"

Did you enjoy it?

bulletYes, very good experience.
bulletI enjoyed all aspects of the trip, particularly the fieldwork and the opportunity to visit and work in another country; it could have only been made better with a language course and more appropriate accommodation, and perhaps the opportunity to mix with other postgraduate students from the host university.

Was it worth it?

bulletYes
bulletYes. Definitely, I got a really good project out of my work there and the experience as a whole was certainly worth it

Would you recommend it?

bulletYes
bulletYes. I think travel and experiencing a different culture is highly recommendable. Support from staff at the host university was excellent, as was support before the trip (help with organisation and a visit to my home university by my host supervisor was very useful – good to make personal contact before the trip).
