Master Degree in Landscape Architecture

 The Master in Landscape Architecture is a two-year degree with 120 ECTS. The curriculum includes an organized set of curricular units corresponding to 75 ECTS plus a dissertation corresponding to 45 ECTS.

The optional curricular units may be chosen from the Bachelor degree in Landscape Architecture in order to compensate deficiencies from basic formation or from other courses of the University of the Algarve or from another University of the European space. This will be determined in accordance with the advice of the Master degree director.

 Objectives

The main objective of the Master in Landscape Architecture is to form professionals with wide technical and scientific background in Landscape Architecture and with the necessary abilities to exercise the profession in Portugal and Europe, as demanded from the Portuguese Association of Landscape Architecture (APAP) and the European Foundation of Landscape Architecture (EFLA) and capable to innovate and to strengthen the scientific research in the key areas of analysis and representation, landscape design project, management and planning of landscape and land. More specific objectives include:

− Compliance with the Bologna principles, including teaching methodologies, duration, employability, and mobility;

− To enable a seamless integration in companies and organizations, by introducing topics such as economical aspects in landscape architecture project management, and atelier organization;

− To develop the interest by research activities and provide some of the required background for subsequent PhD programs.

 Competencies Profile

The Competencies profile of the Master of Landscape Architecture develops along four fundamental components: i) (Theoretical) knowledge, ii) (Technical-professional) Know-How, iii) Social Competencies, and iv) Life-long Learning ability.

The Master degree in Landscape Architecture of the University of Algarve promotes the development of theses competencies, namely:

a) To develop the students capacities for keeping up with the knowledge and technological evolution throughout their professional life;

b) To develop creative and critical skills, and to foster the needs of experimentation, hypothesis formulation and bibliographic search;

c) To develop professional skills such as teamwork and leadership capacities, oral and writing communication;

d) To enable a seamless integration in companies and organizations, by introducing topics such as economical aspects in landscape project management, atelier organization and entrepreneurship;

 Furthermore, the Master offers specific technical and scientific competencies on the following topics:

− Analysis, Design and Development of Landscape Architecture Project;

− Sustainable Landscape Architecture Project;

− Landscape Reclamation;

− Theory and Methods of Landscape Assessment and Planning;

− Environmental Economics;

− Land use Planning;

− Environmental Impact Assessment;

− Entrepreneurship and Atelier Organization;

− Metropolitan Planning

 Career Opportunities

It’s hard to enumerate all the career opportunities for a Master in Landscape Architecture from the University of Algarve. For illustrative purposes only some of these are listed below:

Ateliers of planning, landscape project and environmental impact Study.

Green space construction and maintenance companies.

− Consultant in landscape, environment and open space;

− Director of landscaping in public administration;

− Director of landscaping in private companies like tourist resorts and golf courses;

− Researcher in Landscape Management and Planning.

 Access

The candidate to the Master degree of Landscape Architecture fulfils one of the following criteria:

a) Hold a graduate degree from a Portuguese University in Landscape Architecture or related;

b) Hold a graduate degree in Landscape Architecture, or related, from an European University adherent to the Bologna principles;

c) Hold a foreign degree recognized as a suitable graduate degree by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade do Algarve.

d) Hold a professional or scientific curriculum vitae recognized by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade do Algarve as able to successfully conclude the objectives of the Master.

Candidates whose curriculum vitae do not demonstrate the required background in Landscape Architecture may suggest to the candidates to successfully follow a personal curricular access plan prior to commencement of studies.
