A similar study was conducted in Scotland (UK), for the the Firth of Clyde Nephrops fishery (ICES FU 9), with the EC support (1997 Study Contract "Improvement of Nephrops stock Assessment by use of micro-scale mapping of effort and landings"). In this study, GPS data was collected by using data logger devices installed onboard of selected vessels (Marrs et al., 2002).

The "Bio-economic evaluation of the crustacean fishery of the South of Portugal" (FAR contract MA-3-738) was an EC funded project on this fishery performed between 1993 and 1995 (Cadima et al., 1995). A large amount of information on the past of this fishery was assembled during this study. The UALG (co-ordinator) had IPIMAR (the Portuguese Fisheries Institute) and MRAG (UK) as partners in this study.

The problem of specific effort estimation was recently dealt with in two EC projects. The first one (Study Contract DG XIV/96/066, named "Analysis of the Iberian South Atlantic artisanal fishery: fleet components, specific effort and sampling design"), was carried out by UALG (co-ordinator), IPIMAR and the Spanish Fisheries Institute, IEO (Afonso-Dias et al., 1999). The second one (Study Contract DG XIV/C/96-026 named "Improvement of the definition of species-specific effort in the Spanish multi-species trawl fishery of the Gulf of Cadiz") was carried out by IEO with the collaboration of UALG. Similar methodology is aimed to apply in this study in order to help to split the trawl fishing effort by target species.
