RTDopto

Activities in Optoelectronics and Nanoelectronics

Previous activities dealt with
integrated optic WDM devices and optoelectronic applications of resonant tunnelling diodes (RTDs). Two devices that came-out from the RTD investigation, the Resonant Tunnelling Diode Electro-Absorption Modulator (RTD-EAM) and the Resonant Tunnelling Diode Electro-Optic Modulator (RTD-EOM), were patented and an attempt to commercialize optoelectronic solutions based on this RTD technology led to a spun-out by the University of Glasgow in 2002 [1].

The current activities are focused on the development of new
optoelectronic circuit functionalities based on negative differential conductance devices. The work includes hybrid and monolithic integration of Resonant Tunnelling Diodes (RTDs) with laser diodes and with photo-detectors aiming novel non-linear optoelectronic integrated circuits for chaos based communication systems* and novel RF-optical-RF interfaces for cellular networks. For more information on RTD based optoelectronic devices see book chapter Resonant Tunnelling Optoelectronic Circuits.
