R & D Activities in Optoelectronics and Nanoelectronics


The R & D activities in the areas of Electronics and Optoelectronics, Communications and Signal Processing, comprise the design, fabrication and characterization of devices and circuits: electro-optical and opto-electric converters and optoelectronic oscillators for microwave photonic systems, wireless-to-optical and opticalto-wireless for radio-over-fiber systems, the production and control of chaotic signals. Other  interests:
remote sensing, renewable energies and terahertz technologies.  

 

The work is focused on the development of new optoelectronic circuit functionalities based on negative differential conductance devices. It includes hybrid and monolithic integration of Resonant Tunnelling Diodes (RTDs) with laser diodes and with photo-detectors aiming novel non-linear optoelectronic integrated circuits for future chaos based communication systems and novel RF-optical-RF interfaces for cellular networks. Previous activities dealt with integrated optic WDM devices and optoelectronic applications of resonant tunnelling diodes (RTDs). Two devices that came-out from the RTD investigation, the Resonant Tunnelling Diode Electro-Absorption Modulator (RTD-EAM) and the Resonant Tunnelling Diode Electro-Optic Modulator (RTD-EOM) were patented and an attempt to commercialize optoelectronic solutions based on this RTD technology led to the formation of Essient Photonics, a spun-out of the University of Glasgow in 2002.

Outcomes

  • Demonstration of optoelectronic voltage controlled oscillators based on hybrid integration of a RTD with a laser diode (LD).
