1999 - Master in Structural Engineering (2 years degree) - Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.
In progress - PhD in Civil Engineering (Earthquake Engineering) - Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.

Academic activities

He is teaching at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Algarve since 1993.

Other activities

He was a professional civil engineer for ten years.

Scientific interests

He is doing research in Structural Dynamics and in Earthquake Engineering in general:

• Seismic hazard analysis of Portugal;
• Dynamic analysis of layered soils (local soil effects);
• Structural dynamic analysis (masonry buildings and reinforced concrete buildings);
• Buildings seismic vulnerability analysis and buildings seismic risk assessment;
• Eurocode 8 (EN 1998-1:2004).

He is interested in the development of computer programs for Civil Engineering purposes, and especially for Earthquake Engineering purposes, using Operational Research (optimization and simulation) and Artificial Intelligence (fuzzy systems, neural networks and genetic algorithms). He is able to program in a wide range of languages, including Pascal, Basic, Lisp, Fortran and Java.
