In 1984, while completing my postgraduate research in oceanography at the School of Ocean Sciences at the University of Wales, I took up the post of lecturer at the University of Algarve in Portugal, becoming Head of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department in 2005 and a tenured Professor in 2006.
As the University had opened only one semester before I arrived, there were no research facilities or laboratories. By 1999, basic equipment was in place at the University of Algarve and we were able to apply successfully for national projects and for international projects in the EU 5th and 6th Framework programmes. My research interest in water quality focused initially on eutrophication and then on catchment to coast processes. I became a national expert for Portugal on implementation of the Water Framework Directive and developed a growing interest and involvement in the science-policy interface.
As the university was new, I initially did a great deal of work on curriculum development first at undergraduate and as I gained experience at postgraduate level. Following on from this, I became involved in postgraduate international education and built up a European joint masters degree programme in Water and Coastal Management, working with several other European Universities. I subsequently acted as European coordinator for the development of one of the first Erasmus Mundus masters degree programs, also in Water and Coastal Management. This project involved a network of 52 European and 11 non-European universities and had a budget of over Euro 4.6M.
Between 2008 and 2009, I became further involved in the establishment of effective teaching networks between universities and in the development of three further Erasmus Mundus masters programs: in Quality Analytical Laboratories, Marine Biodiversity and Conservation, and Ecohydrology. I also supported, as an international network partner, a Euro 25M project to develop six Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Windows, each networking together approximately 20 Universities: 10 European and 10 from third world countries.
Over the last five years, my research has become focused on global change in complex social-ecological-economic processes in the coastal zone with a special interest in land-ocean interactions. At the same time, I have become increasingly involved in international cross-disciplinary projects and networks, such as LOICZ (Land –Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone), IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme) and IHDP (International Human Dimension Programme for research into global change) which work to consolidate the links between policy, research, teaching, training and society.
In 2009, I became Chairperson of LOICZ, and in 2009 I joined the NILU Centre of Ecology and Economics as a senior scientist to develop international LOICZ research, retaining my professorship at the University of Algarve.
In addition to these posts, I serve as a both Portuguese National and EU expert on the Water Framework Directive, and Norwegian National expert on the Marine Strategy Directive. I am also an EU expert on the application of DPSIR to Eutrophication. I am an evaluator of research proposals for a number of national and international organisations, including the UK National Research Council, the Fundação da Ciência e da Tecnologia Portugal, the EC Research Executive Agency, and the European Science Foundation.
In recent years, my teaching has been entirely at postgraduate level and includes research supervision of both 48 masters and 10 doctoral students. In addition to the University of the Algarve, I also teach postgraduate courses at the Universities of Wales, Portsmouth, Gdansk, Bergen, Szczecin, Plymouth, Cadiz and Eafit.
I have given oral presentations on my research and course development work at nearly 50 international conferences, meetings and courses. At 26 of these, including a number of lecture tours of China, I was an invited or keynote speaker. I have also chaired several conference sessions and been instrumental in the organisation of 26 national and international scientific meetings, either as coordinator or as a member of the scientific steering committee. Full details of these activities are given in my CV.
My publications include 28 papers published and accepted in peer reviewed journals as well as reports, contributions to newsletters, guidelines and reference works. I am on the editorial board of Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability and a member of the Advisory Board for The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry series.
